Servo drives equipped with electromagnetic brake require a relay for brake control. The relay is mainly used because digital outputs of servo drives don’t provide enough current efficiency. With the relay, you can also use a separate power supply, just for the brake. This completely separates the power system of a motion controller and servo drivers from interference generated by a brake coil. During the relay installation, you must necessarily remember about a reverse biased diode which should absorb the voltage spike generated by the brake coil.
